TPU vs Nylon: Which Filament for Shop Tools?

If you're printing tools that actually get used in a shop, the filament choice matters more than the design. Two materials dominate: TPU and nylon. Here's when to use each — and why Kaizen Forge uses both.
TPU: The Flexible Survivor
TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) is the rubber-like filament. It flexes, absorbs impact, and shrugs off chemicals.
Best for:
- Magnetic battery bases — it grips surfaces and won't scratch paint
- Anything that gets dropped — it bounces instead of shattering
- Parts exposed to brake cleaner, degreaser, and oil
Nylon (PA): The Structural Backbone
Nylon is the workhorse of engineering filaments. Add carbon fiber (PA12-CF) and it gets stiffer and stronger while staying tough.
Best for:
- Seal drivers that take hammer strikes — PA12-CF won't mushroom like brass
- Anything load-bearing or impact-rated
- High-heat environments — nylon handles temps that melt PLA
The Simple Rule
If the part needs to flex or protect surfaces → TPU.
If the part needs to take abuse and hold shape → nylon (PA12-CF).
