Parasitic Battery Drain: How to Track It Down in an Hour

A car that's dead every morning. Customer swears nothing was left on. You charge it, they drive it, it's back in three days. Parasitic drain is one of the most common comebacks in the shop — and one of the easiest to fix if you test it the right way. Here's how we do it.
Rule Out the Easy Stuff First
Load-test the battery before you hunt a drain. A battery with a dead cell acts exactly like a drain: dead overnight, fine after a charge. Same goes for the alternator — a charging system that can't keep up will leave you chasing ghosts.
Only start the amp test once the battery and charging system pass.
Measure the Draw the Right Way
Disconnect the negative cable and put your multimeter in series — red lead to the post, black lead to the cable. Or use a low-amp clamp around the negative cable if you've got one. Either way, don't start pulling fuses while the meter is still bouncing. Let the car go to sleep first.
Ten minutes is the sweet spot. Then read the number. Under 50 milliamps is normal. Some newer cars sit closer to 20. Over 100 means something is awake that shouldn't be.
Pull Fuses Until the Number Drops
Start pulling fuses one at a time and watch the meter. When the draw drops, you found your circuit. Check the obvious spots first — glovebox light, trunk light, aftermarket alarm, dash cam hardwired into the wrong fuse. Half the drains we see are add-ons installed by someone who never checked the draw afterward.
Keep the Computer Alive While You Work
Here's the catch nobody warns you about: disconnecting the battery wipes radio presets, seat memory, and learned idle values. On some cars it triggers a relearn procedure you don't want to explain to a customer. That's where a memory saver earns its keep — keeping 12 volts on the car while the battery cable is off.
