P0016 Code? Prove the Timing Before You Sell a Chain
Share
P0016 is the code that makes a tech stop and think, because the honest fix is usually expensive. Crank and cam correlation, bank 1. The cam and crank don't agree anymore. Nobody wants to sell a timing chain off one code, and you shouldn't.
What P0016 Actually Means
The PCM knows where the crank is. It knows where the cam should be at that crank position. P0016 sets when the cam signal lands outside the window it expects. That's the whole code.
A cam sensor that dies electrically sets P0340. A dead crank sensor sets P0335. P0016 is not a sensor complaint. It's a timing complaint.
Prove It With Live Data First
Warm it up, let it idle, pull the cam retard or correlation value. A couple of degrees is normal. Ten degrees and climbing with rpm is a chain, a guide, or a phaser that isn't parked.
Then command the VVT and watch actual cam angle chase commanded angle. Command it and nothing moves: oil control valve or oil pressure. It moves, but sits wrong: phaser or chain.
Cheap checks in this order. Oil level and condition, because low or sludged oil starves the phaser and no chain job fixes that. Pull the oil control valve and look at the mesh screen. Then ask the owner if anyone has been in the timing lately.
Rule Out the Cheap Stuff
Scope the cam and crank signals against each other. A dropout is electrical, not mechanical. Wiggle the harness while it runs.
If a chain or phaser job happened a few thousand miles back, suspect the timing was set a tooth off or a phaser bolt never got torqued. The phaser slips and the correlation walks. Don't sell a second chain for somebody else's mistake.
When It Really Is the Chain
Stretch is real on high-mileage engines. If the correlation number grows with rpm, the tensioner is out near the end of its travel, or the guide is worn through, the chain is done.
When the chain comes out, the front cover comes off. On UR, AR, TR and GR Toyota engines the oil pump and the front crank seal live inside that cover, so it's one job: chain, guides, tensioner, crank seal, reseal.
What We Use
Setting that cover back on straight is where these jobs go wrong. Cock the cover and the new crank seal goes in crooked, and the oil pump drive doesn't land where it belongs.
The Kaizen Forge Timing Cover & Oil Pump Installation Tool holds the alignment while you set the cover, so the seal goes in square the first time. Made in USA, PA12-CF composite, built by a working technician.
