No Oil Pressure After a Rebuild? Prime the Pump Before You Spin It

You finished the rebuild. New bearings, fresh rings, torque spec on every fastener. You hit the starter, and the oil light stays on. Or worse, you hear that dry knock before pressure ever shows up. Every tech who has been there knows the sick feeling. The comeback is already writing itself.

Most of the time, the engine is fine. The pump just lost its prime. Here's how to keep that from happening, and what to do when it already has.

Why Dry Starts Kill Fresh Engines

An oil pump sitting dry does nothing but spin. The gears turn, but there's no oil in the pickup to move. Every second of cranking without pressure is metal on metal inside a brand new bearing.

It takes seconds to do damage that takes hours to fix. Prime the pump before you ever turn the key.

The Right Way to Prime

Do these before the first start and you'll almost never have a dry start:

Pack the pump. Fill the pump cavity with assembly lube or petroleum jelly before you install it. It holds prime long enough for the pickup to grab oil.

Fill the filter. Pour oil into the new filter and let it soak before you spin it on. That's a full filter of oil the pump doesn't have to pull from scratch.

Crank with the fuel disabled. Pull the fuel pump relay or kill the injectors. Crank in bursts until the oil light goes out and the gauge climbs. Then let it start.

Back-fill the gallery if you can. Some engines have an accessible oil gallery plug. Pump oil in with a hand pump until it weeps. Instant pressure.

The Mistakes That Sabotage Pressure

Prime is only half the battle. Watch these on assembly:

Forgotten gaskets. A missing o-ring behind the pump sucks air instead of oil. Pressure never builds.

Pickup tube not seated. A loose pickup tube or a pinched o-ring does the same thing. Check it twice.

Crooked timing cover. If the cover is cocked, the pump drive binds or slips. Alignment matters more than people think.

Cheap filters. Some filters drain back overnight. The engine starts dry every morning until the pump refills it.
