No Crank, No Start? Check These Before You Throw Parts at It

You push the car in, hit the key, and get nothing but a click. Or worse — silence. The customer is standing there asking what's wrong, and you've got a no crank, no start on your hands. The fastest way out of this is not throwing parts at it. It's running the checks in the right order.
Load Test the Battery Before You Blame Anything
A static voltage reading lies. A battery can show 12.4 volts and still fold the second you put a load on it. Load test it. While you're under there, check the ground cables — block, frame, body. Corrosion hides inside the terminal insulation, and you won't see it until you pull the cable apart.
Work the Starter Circuit: Power, Ground, Signal
Check for battery voltage at the starter's main lug while someone turns the key. Then check the signal wire at the S-terminal when it cranks. If the lug has power and the signal is clean, the starter is the suspect. But before you condemn it, bar the engine over by hand. A seized engine acts exactly like a dead starter, and more than one starter has been replaced because nobody turned the crank pulley first.
Don't Skip the Immobilizer and the Safety Switches
Battery and starter both check out and it still won't crank? Look at the little stuff. Clutch position switch, neutral safety switch, and the immobilizer system. A dead key fob battery or an anti-theft system stuck in armed mode kills the crank signal every time. It's a five-minute check that has saved more than one comeback.
Test Suspect Parts on the Bench
When you pull a relay, a solenoid, or any component you're not sure about, don't guess. Test it on the bench with a known-good 12-volt source. That separates a bad part from a bad circuit in about thirty seconds, and it keeps you from installing a part that was never the problem in the first place.
