Nitrile, Viton, or PTFE: The Seal Material Decision That Stops Comebacks

You press in a brand-new seal, top off the fluid, and hand the keys back. Six months later the same corner of the engine is wet again. The customer's annoyed, and you look like you don't know your job. It probably wasn't your install — it was the material you put in.

Seals aren't all the same rubber. Pick the wrong compound and it swells, hardens, or breaks down against the fluid it's supposed to hold. Here's how to match the seal to the job so the leak stays gone.

Read the Fluid Before You Pick the Seal

Every seal compound is built to survive a specific set of chemicals and temperatures. Engine oil, ATF, brake fluid, fuel, and coolant all attack rubber differently. Before you order, know what's touching the seal and how hot it gets. A seal that's perfect for a transmission pan will turn to mush in a diesel fuel system.

Nitrile (Buna-N) — The Workhorse

Nitrile is what most factory seals are made of. It's cheap, it seals well, and it handles engine oil, ATF, and hydraulic fluid fine up to around 250°F. For a wheel seal, axle seal, or crank seal on a stock daily driver, nitrile does the job. It's the right call for most of what rolls through your bays.

Viton (FKM) — Heat and Fuel

When the seal sees real heat — turbo cars, diesel engines, exhaust-side components — step up to Viton. It holds its shape to 400°F and shrugs off fuel, brake fluid, and solvents that eat nitrile alive. It costs more, but it's the difference between a comeback and a car that stays dry.

PTFE — When the Shaft Chews Seals

PTFE (Teflon) seals are hard and slick. Use them when the shaft has a groove worn in it, when the seal runs in abrasive conditions, or when the fluid is aggressive enough to break down rubber. They survive high temps and resist wear. The tradeoff: they're less forgiving. The bore and shaft have to be clean and smooth, because a PTFE lip won't deform to hide sloppy prep.
