You are standing in the tool aisle with a budget for one new platform, and every guy in the shop has an opinion. Buy into the wrong one and you are stuck with a drawer of orphan batteries. Here is how to decide without overthinking it.
The Real Difference Isnt Power
Both platforms run on the same 12V cells. The M18 just stacks more of them in series. More cells means more voltage under load, which means bigger motors can pull real current. The M12 tops out where the M18 starts.
So the question isnt which one is stronger. Its what are you actually doing all day?
Where M12 Earns Its Keep
Under the dash. On trim. In the engine bay where your arm barely fits. M12 tools are small enough to get into places an M18 will not go, and light enough that your wrist does not complain by Friday.
If you do electrical work, interior work, or anything under a dash, M12 is your platform. The fuel ratchet and the 3/8 stubby impact are the two tools every tech I know owns.
Where M18 Carries the Day
Suspension. Brakes. Anything with torque specs north of 100 ft-lbs. The M18 high torque impact breaks loose what the M12 cannot touch.
Rule of thumb from a guy who runs both: M12 for speed and access, M18 for grunt. Most shops end up needing both, but if you are starting from zero, start with the platform that matches the job you do most.
