Engine Break-In After a Rebuild: What Actually Matters

You just spent a weekend rebuilding an engine. It fired up on the first try, oil pressure is good, no leaks. Now what?
How you drive it for the first 500 miles decides whether it runs 200,000 more or comes back with a rod knock. Break-in is not a mystery. It is a set of rules that actually make sense. Here is what matters.
Break-In Is About the Rings
Fresh rings need cylinder pressure to seat against the walls. Idling in the driveway does nothing. Flogging it cold does damage.
The middle ground is simple: warm it up, then drive it with varied throttle. Load the engine, back off, load it again. That is what seats the rings.
Drive It, Don't Baby It
Short trips and feather-light throttle are just as bad as beating on it. The rings need varying load to seat.
Get it to operating temperature. Run through the gears with moderate acceleration. Let it engine-brake on decel. That pulls oil up the cylinder walls and helps the rings seat. Repeat for the first few hundred miles.
Change the Oil Early
Break-in oil has additives that help ring seating, so do not dump it at 50 miles. But do not stretch it either.
Change it around 500 miles. You want the break-in wear particles out of the oil before they circulate through a fresh bearing set. Check the filter for metal while you are at it.
Watch the Small Stuff
Check for leaks after the first heat cycle. A new seal that drips after a rebuild is a comeback nobody wants.
Watch coolant level. Listen for ticking. Check the oil every morning for the first week. Small issues caught early are cheap. Ignored, they are a second teardown.
