A/C Clutch Not Engaging? Bench Test It Before You Condemn the Compressor

A customer drops off a car with warm air. Charge looks fine on the gauges. Compressor never kicks on. Before you quote a new compressor, do the five-minute bench test. It stops comebacks, and it keeps customers from paying for parts they didn't need.
Check the Easy Stuff First
Pop the hood and look at the clutch. A dead giveaway: the clutch hub and pulley are two different colors. One is shiny from slipping, the other is rusted. That means the clutch tried to engage and couldn't hold.
Check for power at the clutch connector before anything else. If the PCM is commanding the clutch and you see 12V at the pigtail, the problem is in the clutch itself. That's when you pull the compressor and bench test it.
The Five-Minute Bench Test
Unbolt the compressor and take it to the bench. If you're just testing, leave the lines connected when you can — but if parts are coming off, recover the refrigerant properly. Never crack a line under pressure.
Now apply 12V straight to the clutch coil. You'll hear the clutch snap in. That single click tells you most of what you need to know.
What the Click Actually Tells You
Got the click, and the hub spins with the pulley? Coil and air gap are fine. The problem is upstream — a pressure switch, a relay, or the PCM not commanding the clutch at all.
No click? Check the air gap. Most clutches want right around 0.020 inch. Too wide and the coil can't pull the hub in. Shim it or replace the clutch. If the gap is correct and it still won't snap in, the coil is open. Measure resistance — most coils sit in the 3 to 4 ohm range.
One more thing: bench test it hot. A weak coil can pull in cold and drop out once the compressor soaks up engine heat. Let it run for a minute before you call it good.
